Detained Youth – Psychiatric Disorders, Barriers to Mental Health Services, Violent Death

Even though research indicates that the majority of youth in the juvenile justice system have been diagnosed with psychiatric disorders, they often do not receive the treatment and services they need.  This CEU course examines changes in the prevalence and persistence of disorders during the 5 years after detention; describes youth’s perceptions of barriers to mental health services; and compares mortality rates for delinquent youth with those for the general population.

Privacy and Security of Electronic Health Information (HIPAA)

Everyone has a role to play in the privacy and security of electronic health information.  This CE course helps health care providers better understand how to integrate federal health information privacy and security requirements into their practices.

Preventing Child Abuse and Neglect – Evidence-Based Core Strategies

Child abuse and neglect is a serious public health issue with far-reaching consequences for the youngest and most vulnerable members of society.  This CEU course provides strategies that focus on preventing child abuse and neglect from happening in the first place as well as approaches to lessen the immediate and long-term harms of child abuse and neglect.

Domestic Violence and the Holidays: Cultural Sensitivity

Questions may arise about the increase of domestic violence during the holiday season and how to appropriately meet the needs of survivors and advocates working in shelters through the holiday season.  This CEU course examines several issues to consider when working with survivors and their families during the holiday season.

Detoxification and Substance Abuse Treatment (Updated)

Regardless of setting or level of care, the goals of detoxification are to provide safe and humane withdrawal from substances and to foster the patient’s entry into long-term treatment and recovery.  This CE course provides the core concepts of the detoxification field, discusses the primary goals of detoxification services, and highlights issues involved with providing detoxification within systems of care.  In addition, the criteria for placing patients in appropriate treatment settings, the psychological and biomedical issues that may affect detoxification and ensuing treatment, and treatment regimens for specific substance are discussed.
